HPE and SPFEO co-organise seminar exploring new possibilities in local sports development
The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Mr Kevin Yeung Yun-hung joined a seminar co-organised by the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) and School Partnership and Field Experience Office (SPFEO) on 20 January to explore new possibilities in sports development.
At the seminar entitled “Leader’s Dialogue on New Chapter for Sports”, Mr Yeung gave a speech on the prospects of local sports development and the role of local educational institutions in promoting physical activity to an audience of over 100, including school principals, teachers, scholars and practitioners in the field, as well as members of local sports associations.
During his keynote speech on “A New Chapter for Sports Development”, Mr Yeung introduced the Bureau’s initiatives and policies, and provided an outlook for local sports development. He was then joined by Dr Lobo Louie Hung-tak, Associate Head of HPE; Dr Kevin Kam Wai-keung, Director of SPFEO; and Mr Langton Cheung Yung-pong, Professional Consultant of SPFEO and Honorary Chairman of the Hong Kong Aided Primary School Heads Association, for a dialogue on the diverse development of sports under the “new normal”.
EdUHK President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung addressed the seminar, saying: “Robust sports development has a positive impact on personal health, social wellbeing, as well as a city’s economy and image. This seminar provides a platform for participants to discuss local sports development from different perspectives – namely policy implementation, and the development of talent and the sports industry – and stimulate new ideas regarding sports education.”
In line with its “Education-plus” approach, the University has provided holistic support for elite athletes over the years. As part of the approach, HPE is offering a physical education teacher training programme, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate programmes on sports coaching and sports science. Looking ahead, EdUHK will continue to cater to the needs of the growing sports industry through the integration of innovative technology.
The “New Chapter for Sports” is one of three thematic talks in the University’s “Leader’s Dialogue Series”, all of which aim to facilitate an exchange of ideas among the EdUHK community and different sectors of society. The other two seminars will focus on education and teacher professionalism.
